Spring is coming closer, you can just feel it! Although the daffodils are not blooming yet, they are starting to peak out of the ground and they will be blooming before we know it! This month we will be focusing on the weather, using our observational skills to see what is happening outside. March usually brings all sorts of weather, so we shall see what we get! We will also be celebrating the works of Dr. Seuss this month. His books are so important to the development of literacy. His wacky rhymes, whimsical illustrations, and made up words entice children to read his stories, but the real importance for literacy development is that his stories rhyming patterns aid in teaching skills like phonemic awareness and fluency development. When children learn to rhyme it helps them develop the ability to break down words into smaller parts and it helps tune their ears to subtle differences in inflection and rhythm ~ key components to reading aloud in the future. I have been so impressed as to how our class has taken to reading and being read to. Even our youngest students are choosing books from the shelf and bringing them to us to read. Many times I am asked what can be done at home to extend learning and the number one answer is READ together, even if it is just a page or two at a time. Let's move on to Spring!
